SESSIONS
1932 - 1934, Wellington, New Zealand B Tex Morton (Tex Morton [vcl/gt])
[In possibly several sessions between 1932 and 1934, Tex Morton may have recorded around twenty 7" Speak-o-phone aluminum discs. Three of these discs have been preserved at the National Sound and Film Archives in Canberra. Each disc is approximately four minutes in length and contains two songs. The preserved discs contain two versions of End of the Hobo's Trail, two versions of The Insult, a version of Mexican Yodel and a version of The Last Roundup.Other titles possibly recorded on the aluminum discs but not yet located include Home on the Range, If These Lips Could Only Speak and Man in the Street]

[The personnel of the Roughriders is taken from John Edwards. A knowledgeable source indicates that Sister Dorrie sometimes played piano or accordion and that George Raymond played fiddle. [In early to mid-1942, Tex Morton recorded a series of 30 radio shows called All Set and Saddled at Columbia=s studios in the Sydney suburb of Homebush, about ten miles from the city. These were recorded on 16" double-sided laminated discs. Each show contained music, drama, story-telling, and comedy. They were not recorded before a live audience, but some audience applause was dubbed in. The programme was sponsored by a soap company, and the advertisements were an integrated part of the show. The show could not be played with a different sponsor. The program went on air in late 1942. There were about 100 commercial radio stations in Australia at the time, and copies of the show were circulated from one radio station to the next for broadcast. Possibly as many as twelve copies of each show was produced, but only one set has survived. Initially the show was a half-hour show and would fit on the two sides of a single disc. It seems that later the show required three sides and may have been expanded to 45 minutes. Some sides are not included in this discography either because they have been lost or destroyed, or because they have no songs on them. For the purpose of this discography, all of the songs from each radio programme are listed, but no attempt is made to denominate the dramas, stories and comedy routines. Where the matrix is usually found, is a number which indicates the programme number, the side, and the order of the song on the side (not a track number). Following the song title in parentheses are the initials of the lead vocalists and an indication of the accompaniment. Although not originally intended for commercial release, some of the recordings (including four complete shows) can now be found on Kingfisher cassettes, and these recordings are indicated with the label number on which they will be found.] 1942 [radio transcriptions] Sydney, NSW, Australia - Tex Morton and His Roughriders (Tex Morton [vcl/gt], Sister Dorrie Ricketts [vcl], Roughriders: Dick Carr [acoustic steel guitar], probably Tom Wallis [bass], probably Al Kinloch [fiddle], probably Herbie Marks [accordion])

[The matrices for the Tasman/Rodeo sessions are listed as given by John Edwards. Edwards notes that M-28562-B and M-28580-A from the Sydney sessions are untraced. Based on the matrices, it looks like there were two recording sessions in Sydney and as many as five sessions in Auckland. Some collectors maintain that the Tasman and Rodeo labels have different versions for eight of the titles B items 095, 104, 108, 109, 111, 112, 114 and 118 B and thereby speculate that Morton recorded some songs in both Sydney and Auckland. It is possible, but there is no documentation to support this speculation. Some sources indicate that R-006 and R-007 were recorded on May 25, 1949, and that R-008 through R-012 were recorded on February 17, 1950, but the matrices for these recordings suggest that not all the recordings were made on the above dates. Rodeo initially released these recordings in its 10-0000 series, but at some undetermined point switched to its R-000 series for its re-pressings. Some records have extant copies in both series, and some only in the R-000 series.] 1952 Owen Sound, Ontario, CAN B Tex Morton with the Calgary Range Riders (Tex Morton [vcl/gt], Fred Lang [fiddle], other unknown musicians)
unknown titles unissued
[The Calgary Range Riders were Dixie Bill Hilton=s band. At the time of the recording Dixie Bill Hilton, who toured extensively with Tex Morton across Canada, had a daily radio show in Orillia, ON. There were no recording facilities in Orillia, so Morton and the band went to nearby Owen Sound to record. It is unknown what happened to these recordings. They are not listed in the directory of all 45rpm and 78rpm records manufactured in Canada between 1940 and 1990. The only records produced in Canada under Tex Morton=s name were the two Okeh records (see below) which were issued in Canada on the Columbia label. In a radio interview, Dixie Bill Hilton stated he made a recording with Morton, but that recording also has not surfaced. It is possible that recording was for radio advance publicity for the Canada-U.S.-Jamaica tour that Hilton and Morton made together.]

[A 1954 newspaper advertisement for Okeh records suggests that an eighth song was recorded at the session B The Black Sheep - but the recording logs indicate only seven.AThe Neighbor=s Wife@ is an Americanized version of The Drover's Wife, which Morton flubbed by singing quids instead of dollars, and it is marked as Out on the recording logs. In the Okeh advertisement, the reverse side of The Black Sheep is The Neighbor's Wife. Possibly because the recording of The Neighbor's Wife was not acceptable, the recording of The Black Sheep was scratched. There are reports that Morton made other unofficial recordings in Nashville, but no such recordings have ever surfaced.] 1954 [live] Carnegie Hall, 57th Street and Seventh Avenue, New York City - Tex Morton

[These recordings were taken back to Australia by Morton, who said they were made at Carnegie Hall. Carnegie Hall has been unable to provide a precise date for Morton's two reported performances there, nor is there any listing of the event in the New York Times. It is possible that Morton=s performances at Carnegie Hall were at a private function, hence no listing in the Times, and were held in one of the smaller recital halls seating around 260 rather than the main hall. It is also possible that the Carnegie Hall setting is an embellishment by Morton.]
